Captain R.C. Lucas of Manchester, Ohio, left an indelible mark as a riverboat pilot, businessman, and community leader. Born in 1903 in Rome, Greene Township, Adams County, Chick’s life was shaped by the currents of the Ohio River and the opportunities it provided. Starting as a deckhand at just 16 years old, he earned his riverboat pilot’s license at 18, embarking on a 42-year career that would define his legacy.

Over the years, Lucas became a master of both steam-powered and diesel-powered boats, a rarity in his time. His reputation as one of the best shipmasters in the business was built on skill, reliability, and leadership. Lucas not only piloted numerous vessels but also owned and modified five of his own, tailoring them to meet the demands of river commerce. His final boat, a diesel-powered vessel named “The Lucy Jane Lucas” after his mother, was a testament to his ingenuity and dedication to his craft.

Beyond the river, Lucas invested in his home community, becoming a major landowner and successful farmer. His leadership extended to the banking industry, where he played a pivotal role in shaping financial services in Adams County. On May 15, 1959, he was named president of Farmers National Bank of Manchester. Under his leadership, the bank merged with Farmers Bank and Savings Company of Peebles, creating a unified institution serving the entire county. The main office, built in West Union, opened on September 3, 1968, introducing the first drive-through banking window in Adams County.

Even after stepping down as president, Lucas remained vice president of the Manchester branch for several years, continuing to contribute to the growth of the local economy. He retired from daily work in 1979, leaving behind a legacy of innovation, community service, and leadership.

Captain R.C. Lucas’s life reflects the pioneering spirit of Adams County, where hard work and vision turn ambition into lasting contributions. His story inspires future generations, reminding us of the vital role individuals play in shaping their communities.
