His remarkable feats extended beyond sports; he served with valor in the United States Air Force, completing over 266 combat missions during the Vietnam War. Recognized for his bravery, he received two Silver Stars, five Distinguished Flying Crosses, and a Purple Heart.

In addition to his military service, Wayne played a pivotal role as an educator at the US Air Force Academy and later at MIT, shaping the future of aviation and leadership. His dedication to excellence earned him prestigious inductions into the US Naval Aviation Hall of Fame in 2012 and the Kentucky Aviation Hall of Fame in 2014.
